MASKNE!

Maskne

I decided to talk about Maskne because I took a poll on my IG stories and it turns out that many of my friends are getting it! GAH, so sorry.  So I have had a lot of people asking me for advice on what to do.

PSA on masks: Wear a mask - it is an act of love of your fellow humans. (Hugs and hearts)

What is Maskne?

Maskne is when you develop pimples and acne as a result of wearing masks for a long period of time. Masks can cause friction that can clog pores plus there is a lot of humidity in there that can also clog pores.

What can we do about it?

*Make sure your mask is clean.  If you have cloth masks, launder them daily.  If you use a disposable one, use it for one day.  You can even get a new one for the afternoon. (After lunch perhaps?)

Taking care of your skin is essential!

*Wash your skin morning and night.

One of the best pieces of advice was given to me when I was about 14 by my mom’s friend Donna, who was known for her beautiful skin. She said: “Sweetheart, if you want good skin, wash your face every night, no matter what.”  And I thought, maybe if I do what she does, I’ll have beautiful skin when I’m her age!

I know you are tired and you just want to crawl into bed, but I promise it’s worth it to stop, take a breath and give yourself a moment of peace and self care at the sink before you go to bed.

Look in the mirror and tell yourself you did a great job today!

Your cleanser needs to be gentle and needs to have safe, botanical ingredients.

Use a gentle cleanser with lactic acid.  Some of you have used my honey and orange cleanser and that is perfect because it has honey, which kills bacteria AND lactic acid. Lactic acid acts as a chemical exfolliant and encourages cell turn over.

Moisturizing is essential.

Use a moisturiser that has ingredients that help with acne but aren’t harsh.  For example something with hyaluronic acid and with B vitamins like panthenol and niacinamide.  Niacinamide is a new favorite of mine because it takes care of many skin conditions including acne, fungal acne, hyperpigmentation and is amazing for aging skin. It calms redness and sensitivity, controls sebum production in the skin but is well tolerated by all skin types including sensitive.  If you have used our honey and orange moisturizer, it has these very ingredients too!

Don't use toners that strip your skin.

Witch hazel is out.  Don’t use benzyl peroxide.  I recommend something with white willow bark which is the natural version of salicylic acid.

3-4 times a day you can use a clay mask to draw out impurities.

Try our Enriching Cleansing Mask!  It is a gentle cleanser AND draws out impurities.
